Saint John Hospital announced today plans to consolidate Obstetrics (OB) Services to its sister affiliate, Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., effective Feb. 15, 2013.
“As the first private hospital in Kansas, Saint John Hospital has delivered thousands of babies into the world for many generations, and we’re proud of that tradition,” said Dan Sheehan, Chief Administrative Officer of Saint John Hospital. “Unfortunately, the health care landscape is changing, and over the last few years, we have seen a decline in births and a lack of OB providers in the area.”
“Based on input from our medical staff and community need assessments, we’ve decided it is best to centralize services to Providence, which also has been the birthplace of generations,”
adds Randy Nyp, president/CEO of Providence Medical Center and Saint John. “Providence has capacity, is located nearby and can offer Leavenworth County residents a number of enhanced capabilities.”
At Providence, which is just 20 minutes away from Leavenworth County, families will be able to access the skills of our top-notch medical and nursing staff as well as the comforts of home. Providence’s services include 24 hour anesthesia, a 24 hour special care nursery staffed with certified, neonatal nurse practitioners, board-certified neonatologists from Children’s Mercy Hospital, family management support, expert lactation consultant for breastfeeding mothers and family education. In addition, Providence offers all private rooms in a modern and roomy facility with state-of-the-art C-Section suites, a highly experienced nursing staff, on-site Spanish interpreter and extensive resources for adoptive parents.
Marc Luckett, M.D., an employed, board-certified OB/GYN, will continue to see patients at his Saint John office (3550 S. 4th Street, Suite 141, Leavenworth), and beginning Monday, Feb. 4, at his new Providence office. The office is located at 8919 Parallel Parkway, Ste. 440, Kansas City, Kan. in the Providence Doctors Building. Appointments may be scheduled by calling 913-680-6310 (Leavenworth) or 913-281-8500 (Kansas City, Kan.)
Current obstetrics patients at Saint John are encouraged to coordinate a care plan to deliver their babies at Providence. Saint John will no longer have OB physicians on call through its Emergency Services department.
“We thank the Saint John Women’s Center staff and medical staff for their years of unwavering dedication, integrity, passion and commitment,” Sheehan adds. The hospital is making every effort to help staff through the transition including offering severance packages and career outplacement assistance, for those who are eligible.
