Providence Medical Center, a Member of Prime Healthcare, today announced that it has achieved the Healthgrades 2021 America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award™. The distinction places Providence in the top 5 percent of nearly 4,500 hospitals assessed nationwide for its superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems.

“This is the fourth year in a row that Providence has received this distinction,” says Karen Orr, RN, MSN, MBA, CMSRN and CEO of Providence Medical Center, “and given COVID-19, it has never been more relevant. When you look at the statistics behind this award, this designation translates into actual saved lives in our community.”

Healthgrades further states that during that same period, if all hospitals performed similarly to those achieving the award, 167,235 lives could potentially have been saved during COVID.

In addition, from 2017 through 2019, patients treated in hospitals receiving the America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award had, on average, a 27.4 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award, as measured across 19 rated conditions and procedures for which mortality is the outcome.*

“Given that the delivery of healthcare has profoundly changed due to COVID-19, we want to extend our congratulations to the hospitals that received Healthgrades America’s 250 Best Award. These organizations are committed to providing exceptional clinical outcomes for their patients,” says Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades.

Orr adds that the contributions of all hospital staff members was crucial in achieving these milestones during the sustained pressures of the pandemic.

“These latest awards speak to our ongoing commitment to quality despite battling the challenges of COVID,” Orr says. “Last year, Providence Medical Center celebrated its 100th-year anniversary, and with our collective mission to treat every patient with compassionate and exceptional care, we are on the path for 100 more serving the wonderful communities in Kansas City.”

Healthgrades America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award recipients are recognized for overall clinical excellence and providing top-quality care across multiple specialty lines and areas. During the 2021 study period (Medicare Fiscal Years 2017-2019), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 most common inpatient conditions and procedures — as measured by objective performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).

Providence Medical Center was also named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals™ for Gastrointestinal Care (4 years in a row), General Surgery (4 years in a row), Orthopedic Surgery (4 years in a row).

Among other recent, national awards, Providence Medical Center was named to the 2020 Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals list and received an ‘A’grade in the fall 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing Providence’s achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. (The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Safety Grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to all general hospitals across the country and is updated every six months. It is based on a hospital’s performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.)
